The sweater/jumper/pullover always seems to become fashionable at least every decade or so and the Irish Jumper is no exception.
Traditionally fisherman’s attire the Irish jumper is classically a bulky garment with prominent cable knit patterns over the body of the sweater. The choice of pattern does differ but are essentially traditional and symbolic. The cable stitch is representative of the cable used by fishermen in their daily work life and is said to be a wish for safety and good luck. The diamond pattern is a wish for success, wealth and treasure. There are many types of pattern associated with the Aran Sweater each with its own significance.
In Scotland we typically call this type of sweater an Aran Jumper named after the Isle of Aran the largest island in the firth of Clyde (Scotland). The Aran is typically a natural cream hue as the wool in times gone by was unscoured retaining its natural oils and character however in modern times the Aran sweater can be knitted in any colour you want and is more likely to be machine knitted rather than by hand in the traditional way.
