I love Bohemian style its exotic influence has for 200 years provided a delightful alternative to conventional fashion. The origin of the word Bohemian can be traced back to describe a Celtic tribe who were said to dwell in an area somewhere between Germany and Poland in the first century BCE. Today this area is called the Czech Republic and even though Europeans in the first century called the area Bohemia it was known to the people of the time who occupied this area as Czechy. Czechy or Bohemia was culturally diverse, its population included Czechs, Germans and Romany Gypsies.
The Europeans of the time held a romanticised view of the lifestyle of the Romany people. Romany’s were considered people dwelling on the outskirts of society a culture that despite the tyranny of persecution were free to experience
adventure in its purest form and develop a rich counter culture in stark contrast to the staid European culture of the time.
It was this romanticised notion of the Roma people and their mysterious lifestyle which heavily influenced the artistic movement of the mid-18th Century. Artists like the Roma were held on the outskirts of polite society, this rejection by the conventional establishment resonated with them deeply and they began to think of themselves as Boehme. The resulting free spirited lifestyle adopted by artists became a vital aspect of the Romantic Movement.
Bohemian style at its heart consists of loose colourful clothing often made of natural fabrics, loose flowing hair, layering, beads, bangles, scarves, patterns, lace, ethnic clothing, large earrings or hoops, large brimmed hats the mixing of historical elements all of which give rise to an air of dishevelment and an appearance of non-traditional styling which we now refer to Boho Chic.
The Boho culture fair is a must for those of us who revel in this free spirited approach to style. I picked up this beautiful outfit from Stars Fashion called simply Glastonbury there and I encourage you to check out the fair ASAP!!!
